Rethinking the Knit Hat Decrease
One of the benefits of the Showy Decrease is its dual use as a decorative element and as a decrease. Blend these two functions together and it’s possible to hide your crown shaping in plain sight! I’m pretty excited about it. Ten different hat tops have already been designed that use the Showy and Subtle Decreases and more are in the works. The Vortex and Rip Cord hats have already been announced. They act as tutorials for two of the core hat shaping ideas – using diagonal and vertical lines to create hat top design elements. We’ll be rolling out more in the months ahead (hint, there’s a new one next week).
It can be as simple as the spiral or as much fun as this intricate (but simple to knit) aqua hat that’s coming soon. And even when you use it alone it still rocks.
If you’ve looked closely, you may have noticed the two-tier hat top closure. See it? More on that next time.

I just found your blog, and I love your concept of the showy decrease and subtle decrease, but as a beginner/intermediate knitter, I’m dying for patterns that use it vs just the concept (that I’d have to figure out how to put into patterns I want to do?) I’m a PRO at following a pattern, but finding patterns for the (simple) knitting I want to do is apparently difficult. I’m praying that you’re ABOUT to release the pattern for the hat in the middle of the image on this post… I think it’s gorgeous and I’d love to try it out!!
Hi Betsy! So very glad you found me. There are a bunch of hats already published to start with. I would recommend the Heliosphere Hat as a good starter. We write very detailed patterns. You can find all our patterns on our website here http://knittingnuances.com/designs/index.html and on Ravelry. The patterns are designed exactly as a means to show how the Nuances can work. Don’t worry, there are more patterns on the way! I’ll move the one you like up on the list. Laura
